Cooperation between Poland and France is also a driving force in the field of nuclear energy; our countries are the largest in developing nuclear power plant construction programs in Europe, French President Emmanuel Macron said in Paris at a press conference with Donald Tusk..
Europe must be a security and defense power
Macron said at a joint conference with Tusk that France and Poland are preparing to open a new chapter in their relations and prepare a new bilateral treaty that will replace the 1991 treaty.
This treaty will define a new framework for our cooperation in all areas: defense, nuclear energy, scientific and cultural cooperation. These different topics are at the heart of French-Polish relations and in strategic sectors for the future of Europe
– emphasized the president. Therefore, he noted, this opening of cooperation will contribute to increasing Europe’s sovereignty.
Macron said that during talks with Tusk they will discuss, among other things: topic of support for Ukraine. He recalled that the second anniversary of the beginning of large-scale Russian aggression against this country was approaching.
Here I would like to recall our unwavering support for Kiev and the Ukrainian people and underline Poland’s commitment. From the very beginning of the conflict, during the French Presidency and recently during the EU Council, we talked about opening negotiations to accept and strengthen Europe’s future in Ukraine
said Macron.
We must continue these efforts, especially in the defense field
– he pointed out.
He added that the issue of security and defense in Europe is related to Ukraine. He assessed that Poland and France “have a major role to play here”.
Here I would first like to emphasize the operational cooperation between our militaries within NATO and the EU, and emphasize everything that Europe is doing to provide Ukraine with strategic equipment. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy is preparing proposals in this direction
– added. Macron indicated that this would allow increased arms production in Europe.
Europe must be a security and defense force, complementary to NATO and the main pillar of the North Atlantic Alliance.
– emphasized the President of France.
Relations between Poland and France
During a joint briefing of politicians ahead of the talks, the Polish prime minister noted that his intention was to start his term as prime minister by “reviving Poland’s relations with key European partners as quickly as possible.”
He added that it is no coincidence that his first visits as Prime Minister were Brussels, Kiev and Paris. Tusk emphasized that Poland and France are traditional friends.
We have known each other for many years, we are friends and we trust each other; we could always rely on each other
– he said.
There is no alternative to NATO
The head of the Polish government also said that he believed that in these difficult and demanding times “the position of France and Poland is very similar.”
And this in all important issues, bilateral, intra-European and those concerning the security and geopolitical position of Europe, especially in the context of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
– said Tusk.
Here in Paris, I would like to emphasize once again very clearly that there is no alternative to the EU, no alternative to transatlantic cooperation, no alternative to NATO. Europe must become a safe continent, and this means that the EU, France and Poland must become strong and ready to defend their own borders and their own territories and defend and support our allies and friends outside the EU
– said Tusk.
Energy Union
Tusk recalled the maxim from the work of Alexandre Dumas: “One for all, all for one.”
These are words, this is the idea, this is the philosophy that underlies the European Union and NATO. These are words that well illustrate the idea of solidarity, which has become the basis of modern Europe and the main value of contemporary Poland, my compatriots
– Tusk emphasized.
And this means the need for very practical and determined actions for the European community, for Poland and France, especially in the context of threats.
– he pointed out. As he said, the word “safety” is the key word these days.
He recalled that ten years have passed since he visited most European capitals with a proposal for the Energy Union, that is, a security plan for the European Union.
Today I can only say that energy, food and defense are the three pillars of our common security, and I would very much like to see France and Poland continue to cooperate in a very intensive way.
– emphasized the head of the Polish government.
A mega plan for a secure Europe is absolutely necessary for today’s European security
– Tusk stated.
The head of the Polish government thanked France for its initiatives to increase defense through investments in the defense industry, as well as for its commitment to Ukraine.
The case of Ukraine
I will look for common solutions with French friends when it comes to food security. It is difficult to find in Europe a more pro-Ukrainian politician than me, and it is difficult to find a more pro-Ukrainian nation in Europe than the Polish one, but we must also take into account the interests of food security of Poland and Europe.
– said the head of the Polish government.
Prime Minister Tusk emphasized that he would like to talk to Macron about the security of Polish and French farmers, which directly translates into the security of both countries. He added that one of the topics will also be energy and “a great opportunity for joint projects.”
Today I would like us to send a common signal to Europe and the entire West that we are ready for full solidarity in all situations, even the most difficult. I am glad that we are also innovating here in a sense, I will use the word revitalization again – Weimar Triangle
– said Tusk.
The Prime Minister emphasized that both countries must “take on a very great responsibility and take responsibility for the security and future of Europe very seriously.”
Together with France we are ready
– he pointed out.
