Germany’s best compensation is one that would strengthen the security of the Republic of Poland; it could be involvement in the arms industry or involvement in security guarantees – said Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz when asked about possible forms of compensation for war damage.
On Friday, speaking to journalists after the meeting with the Warsaw insurgents at the Polish Army Museum, the head of the Ministry of National Defense was asked about the words of Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who said during his visit to Berlin that he German Minister Annalena Baerbock would ask “the German government to think in a creative way” about how some form of compensation for these war losses or “reparation” can be found for the losses suffered by Poland during the Second World War
Our political opponents are very surprised at how clearly Radosław Sikorski has expressed this position on our common behalf. We talked about it during the election campaign (…) that we will strive – not just to publish reports, but to really strive and speak directly and clearly
– said Kosiniak-Kamysz.
He added that the previous government “did a lot for internal purposes, but little to obtain compensation.”
The head of the Ministry of National Defense emphasized that “Germany must get involved” in the matter.
Germany has a duty to commemorate its past and to close certain phases that have occurred in its history and which cannot be closed without compensation for Poland.
– said the Deputy Prime Minister.
He pointed out that compensation can take different forms, including in the field of cooperation between Poland and Germany in the field of security and defense.
Greater involvement, including financially, in supporting the military security of Europe, including Poland – this method may be the most effective
– said Kosiniak Kamysz.
He assured that he sees “very great openness” at the German Ministry of Defense.
There is also openness on our part
– added the head of the Ministry of National Defense.
He emphasized that Poland is counting on Germany’s further, increasing involvement in helping Ukraine, which is also crucial for Poland’s security.
This would be the best compensation that would affect the security of the Republic of Poland
– said Kosiniak-Kamysz.
When asked whether such compensation from Germany could partly take the form of, for example, financial or production support for Polish armament programs, he replied:
This is one of the possible concepts – either through involvement in the arms industry or through involvement in security guarantees.
He recalled, among other things: Support for Polish air defense by the German Patriot launch battery, which until December last year was stationed in the Lublin region, near the border with Ukraine.
If it was long-term, long-term, strategic and not just point-by-point, then it also takes on a specific dimension of compensation.
– said Kosiniak-Kamysz.
On September 1, 2022, a report was presented on the losses suffered by Poland as a result of German aggression and occupation during World War II. On October 3, 2022, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs in the PiS government, Zbigniew Rau, signed a diplomatic note on the German side on war compensation. Poland is demanding, among other things, compensation for material and intangible losses amounting to PLN 6 trillion, PLN 220 billion, PLN 609 million and compensation for damages.
January 3 last year The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to this note. According to the German government, the issue of reparations and compensation for war losses remains closed and the German government has no intention of starting negotiations on this matter.
