I regret that Attorney General Adam Bodnar could not afford a human gesture and release Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik from prison until the pardon procedure was completed – said President Andrzej Duda. The head of state summarized Adam Bodnar’s actions towards Maciej Wąsik and Mariusz Kamiński in harsh terms.
In an afternoon statement, the president emphasized that the pardon he requested in 2015 was and is effective, and that Wąsik and Kamiński were sent to prison anyway. Andrzej Duda recalled that, “taking into account the social unrest that occurred in connection with the imprisonment of the ministers”, he decided to initiate a pardon procedure in the manner specified in the Code of Criminal Procedure.
As the President said, the proceedings were “fully conducted.”
The advice of the Attorney General was delivered to me today, after almost two weeks. I regret that the Attorney General, despite my appeal and clearly formulated written requests, has failed to comply with the standard of art. 568 of the Code of Criminal Procedure – the powers he has to suspend the execution of the sentence
– said the president.
“From a human point of view it is incomprehensible to me.”
He emphasized that the Attorney General could have released Wąsik and Kamiński from prisons until the pardon procedure was completed, for humanitarian reasons and to ensure social peace.
Despite my calls, despite the increasingly difficult health situation in which Minister Mariusz Kamiński found himself, despite the ongoing hunger strike, despite Minister Mariusz Kamiński’s hospitalization, Adam Bodnar did not do this. I regret this, Minister. From a human point of view, it is incomprehensible to me that you cannot behave as a former Ombudsman and as a man who worked for many years at the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights. I regret that you cannot afford this human gesture
– said the president.
