Laurynas Kasciunas, Chairman of the National Security and Defense Committee of the Latvian Seimas, called for withdrawal as soon as possible from the convention banning the use of cluster munitions. He also expressed disappointment that the president was delaying a decision on this issue. LRT.
“There are many arguments as to why we should withdraw from this contract. The main argument is that one cannot restrain oneself while preparing for containment and defense during battle. Kasciunas said, “If the Russians can use them, why can’t we? We are the only country in the region that has ratified this agreement.”
He said the Sejm committee expected to hear “very strong arguments” from the president’s representatives as to why the decision on the matter was delayed.
The Convention on Cluster Munitions is an international agreement that prohibits the use, transfer and stockpiling of cluster munitions, that is, munitions that deliver more than one explosive submunition. They can explode if touched or handled. For this reason, such ammunition is considered dangerous for civilians.
Previously The New York Times pointed out that the effectiveness of cluster munitions for the Ukrainian Armed Forces has decreased.
