On January 6, “The Spectator” published a text by Edward Stawiarski devoted to the perception of the current armed conflict in Ukraine by one of the most opinion-forming representatives of the “party of war” – Alexander Dugin. The author spoke to the hero of his text, who stated that the condition for the existence of Russia is the non-existence of Ukraine. According to the Moscow ideologue, there is no place under the sun for both countries at the same time. In other words, the aim of the current war is to eliminate Ukraine as an independent state and incorporate it into Russia.
The day before yesterday it was Georgia, yesterday it was Ukraine
This reminded me of my conversation with Alexander Dugin in March 1998 in Moscow. He then told me that Russia “is not interested in the existence of an independent Polish state in any form. The country is also not interested in the existence of Ukraine. “Not because we don’t love Poles or Ukrainians, but because these are the laws of sacred geography and geopolitics.”
Dugin said Germany is the only country in Central Europe that can treat Russia as a partner. Therefore, the distribution of influence in this part of the continent must take place in an agreement between Moscow and Berlin. However, a necessary condition for such a scenario is that the Americans are driven out of Europe, which Germany will gradually tend to do.
These were the times when Boris Yeltsin ruled the Kremlin and many of Dugin’s predictions seemed like phantasmagoria at the time. However, when Vladimir Putin came to power, the situation changed dramatically. Many geopolitical plans of the ideologue of Eurasianism were implemented. These projects also include the German-Russian rapprochement, symbolized by the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Aggression against Ukraine is only a logical consequence of this policy. Moreover, in justifying his attack on the neighboring country, Putin used the same argument as Dugin: there is no such thing as the Ukrainian nation, and the Ukrainian state is an artificially constructed entity created on the basis of Russian injustice and injustice. So this problem must be solved once and for all.
Dugin, as I said, did not stop at plans to liquidate Ukraine. He said Russia is “not interested in the existence of an independent Polish state in any form.” President Lech Kaczyński framed the threat from Moscow in a similar way, when he said at a meeting in Tbilisi in August 2008: “Today Georgia, tomorrow Ukraine, the day after tomorrow the Baltic states, and then maybe it’s time for my country, Poland. !”
Many people I talk to in our country say it is impossible that Putin does not dare to attack us. I remember the Ukrainians telling me the same thing in 2021.
The final alarm bell
Today, many Western analysts (Americans, British, Swedes, etc.) predict that the outbreak of a new war in Europe is a matter of time. The Russian attack on Poland is no longer an exercise in imagination; it is a very real option today. Perhaps we are in a similar time perspective as the Second Polish Republic in 1936. Let us have no illusions: the French, as then, will not want to die for Gdańsk or Warsaw. Of course we are a member of NATO, but relying solely on allies may not be enough. In a situation of such a serious threat, we must increase our armed potential and increase our deterrent capacity. We have less and less time. This is the final alarm bell.
However, such a serious challenge can only be met by a strong state with a society that is not divided and divided. Meanwhile, what the current governing coalition does after December 13 gives the impression of a gift to Russia. We observe how those in power are destroying the country’s political and legal systems, threatening the immune infrastructure and questioning the meaning of current defense efforts. Strategic investments aimed at increasing the country’s military, energy and logistics security are now in doubt.
History shows that the victims of Russian imperialism are usually weak states, unable to defend themselves, divided and internally divided. Unfortunately, the current government is on its way to bringing Poland to this state. Vladimir Putin may be rubbing his hands.
