“European Council President Charles Michel plans to visit Warsaw to meet Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The date of the visit has not yet been determined,” a senior EU source told PAP.
Michel announced in an interview with Belgian media in early January that he would stand as a candidate for the European Parliament elections in June, and if elected he would leave office in mid-July.
48-year-old Michel, former Prime Minister of Belgium, has been President of the European Council since the end of 2019.
Michel’s priorities
The former Belgian prime minister’s departure was seen as a signal that he attached more importance to his political future than to his current role.
As previously reported by Politico, Michel did not specify whether his decision to run for the European Parliament means he is interested in other important positions, such as becoming the leading candidate of the European Liberals, the third largest political camp in the European Parliament. for the position of President of the European Commission, or whether he wants to replace Didier Reynders as Belgian EU Commissioner.
