Prime Minister Donald Tusk changed his mind at least several times about the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border. First, he felt sorry for “poor people who are looking for their place on earth.” When he later realized that “poor people” were being used as “weapons” by Eastern dictators, he supposedly supported border protection, but at the same time claimed that the dam would never be built. Today he “generously” announced that he would go to the eastern border. “I will look for solutions that prioritize border protection and on the other hand limit the suffering of people trying to reach Poland,” he said today.
Tusk moves to the eastern border
Donald Tusk was asked at Wednesday’s conference whether the Ministry of the Interior and Administration plans to change the provisions of the ministry’s regulation on border traffic, which have been in force since August 2021. According to them, foreigners who do not have the right to enter Poland and cross the border at an unauthorized place are sent back to the border line. The repeal of these regulations is demanded by, among others: Ombudsman.
The Prime Minister noted that he constantly spoke with the head of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński, about the situation on the eastern border.
I’m going to the eastern border soon. I will speak to those who are directly interested, of course mainly the border guard
– he announced.
Tusk stated that the government would do everything in its power to ensure that border protection would be “effective and strict when necessary” and at the same time that “such clear violations of basic, humanitarian human rights do not exist, especially when it concerns the weakest ‘.
The head of government also emphasized that there was no legal authorization for the so-called but at the same time there is a line between border guard actions that are necessary and actions that many will consider brutal or illegal. According to him, no ideal solution has been found in any European country on the front line.
I will look for solutions that prioritize border protection. On the other hand, we will look for solutions that will reduce human suffering, including those who want to reach Poland, but none of these actions should encourage, encourage or facilitate illegal crossings into Polish territory.
– he said.
RPO on pushbacks
Ombudsman Marcin Wiącek wrote in a letter to the Ministry of the Interior and Administrative Affairs, dated the second half of December last year, that the return of foreigners by the Border Guard to the border without an individualized assessment of their situation, i.e. the use of the so-called Pushbacks are the main problem that needs to be solved. According to the Commissioner for Human Rights, the provisions of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration regulation deprive foreigners of the opportunity to apply for international protection.
In addition to the repeal of these provisions, the Ombudsman also demands that the head of the Ministry of the Interior and Administrative Affairs take action to repeal or amend the provision of the Law on Foreigners in force since October 2021, under which foreigners who crossed the border illegally may receive a decision ordering them to leave the territory of Poland.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk had to pull off quite a stunt to both admit that PiS was right and not to admit it, hence the false accusations. I just wonder how he plans to act on border protection to meet both conditions he mentioned, and whether he will fight opposition throughout Europe, and not just in Poland.
