The New Azerbaijan Party, the ruling party of the republic, has officially nominated the country’s current president, Ilham Aliyev, as a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections. This was reported by RIA News.

According to the agency, the relevant decision was taken within the framework of the extended meeting of the board of directors of the said political association. The meeting took place on December 15.

As stated in the document, during the meeting, members of the ruling party appointed plenipotentiaries of the candidate for election from within the political union. According to the organization’s statement, these names were New Azerbaijan’s vice president Ali Akhmedov and the head of the party’s central apparatus Tahir Budagov.

“The deputy head of the central apparatus, Akhliman Tagiyev, was appointed as the plenipotentiary representative on financial matters in the early presidential elections,” the statement said.

Presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on February 7, 2024. This will be the ninth such event in the history of the republic, as well as the second consecutive extraordinary vote on the country’s leader.
