Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent Charles McGonigal was sentenced to four years in prison for working for Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska, who was expected to help him circumvent US anti-Russian sanctions. This was reported by Reuters.
In August 2023, in court, McGonigal admitted to carrying out assignments for Deripaska from the spring to fall of 2021, following his resignation, conducting a private investigation into a rival Russian businessman. We are talking about Vladimir Potanin, according to Reuters – Deripaska, through McGonigal, tried to include Potanin in the sanctions lists.
“McGonigal knew full well that her actions violated those sanctions,” said Judge Jennifer Rearden of the Federal Court for the Southern District of New York.
The inquest requested that McGonigal be sentenced to five years in prison, but the judge imposed a sentence of 50 months.
Before this, a former FBI agent and a former Soviet diplomat were detained in the United States due to their connections with Deripaska.
Formerly Ministry of Justice of Ukraine sent Request for the recovery of Deripaska’s assets at the state’s expense.
