Verkhovna Rada deputy Alexander Dubinsky, expelled from the ruling Servant of the People party, was beaten in a pre-trial detention center, Strana.ua reported, citing a letter the politician sent to his lawyers. He was allegedly beaten during the night and then transferred to another cell.
“I was transferred to another cell at 21:00 yesterday. There they beat me from 1 in the morning until 3 at night and it felt like they broke my rib. There is a strong hematoma there, I looked. Then I sat in a chair in the corridor until 11 o’clock in the morning, then they took me back, only the cell was different,” Dubinsky’s note says.
He added that he thought the incident was clearly a planned action. Dubinsky emphasized that he asked lawyers to find a way for immediate communication in case the attack is repeated.
The Rada deputy was imprisoned in November on charges of treason. In particular, the politician is suspected of corruption and participation in a scheme for men of military age to illegally cross the Ukrainian border. He denies his guilt and considers the case against him to be political persecution.
Previously in Ukraine arrested the estate of deputy Dubinsky.
