Lech Wałęsa is a citizen, just like everyone else. If he gave false testimony, he should be held criminally liable – said the Minister of Education and Science Krzysztof Szczucki in the third program of Polish Radio, referring to the indictment against the former president.

Wałęsa is just as much a citizen as anyone else
The Minister of Education and Science, Krzysztof Szczucki, commented on the issue on Radio Three.
Lech Wałęsa is a citizen, just like everyone else. If he has given false testimony, he should be held criminally liable
– said Szczucki.
In principle, any self-respecting historian of the 20th century confirms that Lech Wałęsa had a period of cooperation with the security service, but Lech Wałęsa himself probably cannot admit this and there is a small group of his admirers who deny the historical facts.
– added.
Accusation of giving false testimony
As the spokesperson of the Warsaw Public Prosecution Service, Prosecutor Szymon Banna, told PAP, the charges against Wałęsa concern false testimonies regarding the signing of more than fifty documents, mainly monetary certificates, but also the obligation to cooperate with the security service , which are included in the personnel files of the secret police, a colleague nicknamed Bolek. The indictment was sent to the Warsaw-Śródmieście District Court in Warsaw.
The proceedings in which the former President of the Republic of Poland testified as a witness were initiated in February 2016 in connection with his public statements. Lech Wałęsa subsequently said that the materials found in the house of the former Minister of the Interior of the Polish People’s Republic, Czesław Kiszczak, were fake. The aim of the work of the Institute of National Remembrance was to determine whether a crime involving falsification of documents had occurred and to identify possible perpetrators of this act. At that time, Lech Wałęsa had the status of a victim in the IPN investigation.
As part of the IPN procedure, evidence was secured, among other things: in the form of a personal file and a work file with the code name of a secret employee Bolek, as well as other documents revealed during a search of the house of the widow of the former General and Minister of the Interior of the Polish People’s Republic, Czesław Kiszczak
– said prosecutor Banna.
The former president was questioned as a witness in April 2016. He then testified that he never signed an agreement to cooperate, never wrote or signed a complaint, and never signed a receipt for receiving money.
After presenting a number of documents from the undercover employee’s file, he denied having drafted or signed any of the more than 50 documents presented to him.
– said prosecutor Banna.
Resignation of members of the Committee on Russian Influence
The minister also referred to the dismissal of eight members of the State Commission for investigating Russian influence on Poland’s internal security in the period 2007-2022: Sławomir Cenckiewicz, Andrzej Zybertowicz, Przemysław Żurawski vel Grajewski, Łukasz Ciegotura, Marek Szymaniak, Arkadiusz Puławski, Andrzej Kowalski and Michał Wojnowski.
MPs from the Civic Coalition, Poland 2050, PSL, New Left and some Confederation MPs voted in favor of dismissing the committee members. MPs from Law and Justice, Kukiz’15 and part of the Confederation Club voted against the dismissal of the committee members.
New members must be appointed, the law is in force, the committee must function
– said the minister, but added that what happened in the Sejm “was clearly the dismantling of this committee.”
The Civic Platform and its coalition partners do not want to discover the truth about the reset, they do not want to discover the truth about Polish-Russian relations after 2007. The other side of the political scene is trying to turn the tables. There is laughter in the room when they talk about the pro-Russian nature of Law and Justice, because our camp has been warning against Russia’s imperial plans for a long time, while Donald Tusk obediently implemented the reset policy
- emphasized Minister Szczucki.
