Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina said that her country has started informal interstate consultations on the possible candidacy of Foreign Minister Krisjanis Karins for the post of NATO Secretary General. This was reported by delphi In reference to TV3.

Silinya reminded that the procedure for electing the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance was not regulated. According to him, informal negotiations have already begun at the level of ambassadors of NATO countries, during which Tallinn reported that it has a candidate for this position.

“We will seek support and see if we have the opportunity and have a clear process, we will make a formal decision on nominating candidates,” the Prime Minister said.

Silina noted that Latvia “has a strong island” and that none of the alliance’s new member states have yet led NATO. According to him, Karins has good experience in public service and understanding of international processes.

The politician believes that it would be a great success for the countries of the Baltic region if a representative of one of the countries became the head of NATO.

Before that Bloomberg reportedIt is stated that Latvian Foreign Minister Krisjanis Karins hopes to participate in the NATO Secretary General elections to be held in 2024, when Jens Stoltenberg will resign.

The publication quotes the statement as follows: “If Latvia decides to run for the post of Secretary General, Krisjanis Karins is ready to participate in the competition.”
