Why do we miss Independence Day a little? According to the editor-in-chief of “Krytyka Polityczna”, Agnieszka Wiśniewska, this happens… By “constantly talking about the nation”. The sociologist shared this ‘brilliant’ thought on TVN24, when the channel reported on yesterday’s Independence March.
““We, the Nation”
TVN24, like many other channels, reported on the Independence March, which television described as a “march of nationalists”. Naturally, there had to be real-time commentary on the event so that viewers immediately knew what to think. However, this is probably not what Civic Coalition supporters, who eagerly watch TVN, expected.
The event was commented on by Agnieszka Wiśniewska, a sociologist and editor-in-chief of “Krytyka Polityczna”, and the subject of her statement turned out to be not only the MN itself, but also… PO leader Donald Tusk’s message about Independence Day, which was published on social media yesterday and was titled “We “Nation”.

“Always talking about the nation
Wiśniewska began… to criticize Tusk’s statement, and specifically the politician’s use of the word ‘nation’.
““Nation, nation, nation”… Today in Poland, while so many nations live here, while Ukrainians are fighting for independence abroad. Talking about the nation all the time? This is a category that today should actually be replaced by ‘society, community’, because that is what our lives look like around us
– she said.
Because we live here, we walk the streets. We see that it is not only nationalist Poles who live here next to us. In that sense it is still a missed opportunity, we have failed a bit with this celebration
– she argued.
What hurts more is the criticism of the term ‘nation’ or… Donald Tusk?
Wiśniewska’s statement was shared on the
I turned it up and put on my glasses. I wanted to see who talks so wisely… It’s Agnieszka Wiśniewska
– He wrote.
Journalist Maciej Pieczyński drew attention to what Ukrainians are actually fighting for.
An intellectually compromising statement from a sociologist who complains: “still a nation, a nation… today in Poland, while so many nations live here? When do Ukrainians fight for independence abroad? So: Poles cannot celebrate that they are Poles, but Ukrainians can celebrate being Ukrainians. Ukrainians can fight for independence (for independence, not for European values! – the sociologist himself says so!), but Poles can no longer celebrate their own independence. As a sociologist complexes about her origins, she can always leave Poland. For example against Ukraine;) and more seriously: this is a gigantic hypocrisy on the part of people with similar views – they disgust Polish patriotism and admire Ukrainian patriotism. Even though the Ukrainians are fighting in the name of the same backward, quarrelsome, conservative principles as the Poles did a hundred years ago – for their own independence, for their own nation. The Ukrainians are exterminating the Russian language, Russian culture and the Russian Orthodox Church precisely in the name of the struggle for the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian culture and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. It is difficult to imagine a more nationalistic attitude. But a confused sociologist is impressed because it is done by Ukrainians, not Poles
Many internet users who support the opposition on the X platform, especially PO, were very hurt by Wiśniewska’s statement. However, it is not known whether they were offended by the complaining about the word “nation” or by the fact that someone on TVN dares to criticize Donald Tusk for something.
And did you know that everyone who uses the word ‘nation’ are nationalists with outdated views? I heard this from the far left side of the political scene after an interview by Agnieszka Wiśniewska, who criticized Tusk’s statement today on TVN24.
Well, she did that pretty well. First she discredited the value of the nation, and finally she said that we are failing to celebrate independence. I don’t know how she manages it.
Some even managed to ‘register’ a left-wing sociologist with PiS, who doesn’t like it when people talk about the ‘nation’.
This person does not like anything about the opposition, which is not yet in power. I think she likes PiS’s rule…
Massacre. Obviously a bucket of slop was thrown at D. Tusk. 🤦
It is truly astonishing that the left is awakening national identity in people who, perhaps until now, have spouted the term “this country” with disdain more often than they used the word “Poland.” One might fear, however, that a greater “sin” in their eyes was criticizing Donald Tusk. Everyone knows that in some quarters this is inexcusable.
