In a manner consistent with the law, television, radio and public media will again become public media; we will do it immediately after the new government is installed – PO Vice-President Borys Budka announced in the Sejm on Wednesday, when asked about the letter from the Chairman of the National Broadcasting Council, Maciej Świrski, to the boards of directors of the public media .
In connection with the announcements of representatives of parties planning to create a future parliamentary majority regarding changes in public media, the Chairman of the National Broadcasting Council, Maciej Świrski, sent a special letter to the boards of directors of the public media.
The contents of the letter were published by the media, including: industry portal virtualmedia.pl.
Taking into account the public statements of politicians of some political parties about the illegal takeover of public media, I warn you to pay special attention to the safety of both your employees and your properties used to create and broadcast programs. Be particularly diligent when implementing internal security procedures. I also advocate strengthening building security and extra detailed checks on your guests and other people who are not your employees
– wrote the head of the National Broadcasting Council.
Budka’s attack on the head of the National Broadcasting Council
The vice-president of PO and the head of the KO club, Borys Budka, was questioned about this issue in the Sejm.
There are several figures from Polish public life who discredit the offices they hold. This competition is quite strong, and the head of the National Broadcasting Council is one of those key figures
– said Budka.
He recalled that the National Broadcasting Council must safeguard media pluralism and reliability, and Świrski – as he said – did nothing for years when the public media turned into the media of a single party.
However, sending these kinds of foxes discredits him even more
– added.
Television, radio and public media will become public media again in a manner consistent with the law. We will do it immediately after the new government is installed
– he announced.
I would like to remind Mr Świrski and other members of the National Broadcasting Council that, according to the ruling of the Constitutional Court, the powers granted by PiS to the National Media Council are unconstitutional.
– he said.
In its judgment of December 2016, the Constitutional Court ruled that it was unconstitutional to completely exclude the participation of the National Broadcasting Council from the procedure for appointing members to the governing bodies of public radio and television broadcasters. A solution that would deprive the National Broadcasting Council of its influence over the selection of public media authorities was introduced by the amendment to the Broadcasting Act adopted in December 2015. The National Media Council has the power to appoint authorities, for example TVP or Polish Radio.
When asked whether the parties that had obtained a parliamentary majority had already taken the first step regarding changes in the public media, Budka confirmed that they had done so, but stipulated that the public would learn the details as they were taken .
