I believe that the president of PSL, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, would probably be a better candidate for the premiership than Donald Tusk, but this is what the leaders of KO, Lewica and Trzecia Droga agreed on, and I respect these arrangements, said MP Marek Sawicki (PSL) in an interview with PAP.
PSL President Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz asked on TOK FM radio on Thursday what he would do in a situation where President Andrzej Duda entrusted him with the mission of forming a government as a first step, and replied that on Wednesday, during meeting at the presidential palace, the leaders of the Third Way clearly announced to the president that he constitutes a majority.
We have also nominated a candidate for prime minister: Donald Tusk. And this was confirmed by all groups, those who created the Senate Pact, the desire to form a government, the desire to show who constitutes the majority. Any other consideration is just a waste of time
– said the PSL leader.
When asked what would happen if the president entrusted him with the mission of forming the government, Kosiniak-Kamysz said he did not think “the president would do anything that would not have a positive effect.”
We have clearly divided the scope of responsibility, at least in terms of who has the mission to form the government. The rest is still subject to discussion
– added the head of PSL.
Sawicki was asked by PAP how President Kosiniak-Kamysz would behave if the president actually entrusted him with the mission of forming a government.
Mr. President was already asked about this and he clearly said that the candidate of the parliamentary majority for Prime Minister is Donald Tusk
– replied the PSL MP.
I believe that Kosiniak-Kamysz would probably be a better candidate than Donald Tusk, but this is what the leaders of KO, Lewica and Trzecia Droga agreed on and I respect these agreements
– said Sawicki.
When asked whether President Kosiniak-Kamysz would refuse the presidency and not take on this task, the party member replied:
The problem is he doesn’t want to bid.
I know this, please believe my political experience, that President Andrzej Duda will offer the formation of a government to Donald Tusk as a first step.
– said Sawicki.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, consultation meetings between the president and representatives of the electoral commissions that will be represented in the next Sejm took place at the presidential palace. In a statement on Thursday, President Andrzej Duda said he had tentatively scheduled the first meeting of the Sejm of the 10th term for Monday, November 13. The president also highlighted that there are two political groups that claim to have a parliamentary majority and have a candidate for prime minister. As he said, the United Right’s candidate for prime minister is Mateusz Morawiecki, and the candidate for KO, Third Way and Left is Donald Tusk.
In the Sejm elections, PiS won 194 seats, KO – 157; Third way – 65; New Left – 26; Confederacy – 18.
The constitution provides for three possible steps in selecting the government after the elections. In the first, the President plays a major role, who, among other things, appoints the Prime Minister, taking into account that the government he proposes must receive the support of an absolute majority in the Sejm in order to receive a vote of confidence. If this attempt fails, the Sejm takes the initiative. Then the Prime Minister and the government need an absolute majority of votes in the presence of at least half of the legal number of deputies. If parliamentarians fail to form a government, the initiative returns to the president and a simple majority is needed for a vote of confidence.
