“The defense plan, adopted during the government of Donald Tusk by Minister Klich and the then Chief of the General Staff, General Cieniuch, was in fact a plan to wipe out half the country. (…) These gentlemen first consciously adopted a certain false political diagnosis regarding friendly relations, partnership and friendly relations with Russia, and then, based on this false diagnosis, made cuts in the defense system,” says Dr. Jan Parys against the wPolityce.pl portal, sociologist and former head of the Ministry of National Defense.

wPolityce.pl: Law and Justice published the spot “Tusk’s Line of Betrayal” and also starts a campaign with billboards to remind Poland of the PO-PSL government’s attitude towards Eastern Poland, including the Polish defense plan to the Vistula line. How would you assess that defense plan from the perspective of what we have been observing on the eastern border for a year and a half?
Dr. Jan Parys: The defense plan, adopted during the government of Donald Tusk by Minister Klich and the then Chief of the General Staff, General Cieniuch, was in fact a plan to wipe out half the country. I would not like to use overly harsh words, but it is clearly visible that these gentlemen first consciously adopted a certain false political diagnosis regarding friendly, partnership and friendly relations with Russia, and later, on the basis of this false diagnosis, made cuts have implemented. in the defense system.
They not only liquidated many military units, but also reduced the army to less than 100,000. soldiers. We must openly admit that with such a large reduction, defending Poland, neither on the Bug nor on the Vistula, is simply impossible. Our country is so large that the strength of our military must be several times greater than they expected to effectively defend themselves.
It is clear that they did not foresee any effective defense of the country, either on the Vistula or on the Bug line. They simply intended either to believe in Russia’s goodwill and lack of aggression, or to believe that in the event of aggression the North Atlantic Alliance would come to our aid. Of course, but NATO comes to the rescue when a country defends itself, and under no circumstances when it withdraws or flees.
In the new PiS spot ‘Tuska’s line of betrayal’, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also refers to recordings from the Sowa i Wiedzy restaurant, where one of the politicians speaks vulgarly about his attitude towards Eastern Poland.
Treating eastern Poland as a territory to be handed over to a potential aggressor undoubtedly ignores the lives and property of half the nation. This shows a very contemptuous attitude towards one’s own country, and if such a variant were to become reality, Poland would become a caricatured small country that would only be an addition to the German state.
What actually resulted from the Tusk government’s desire for good relations with Russia, or perhaps from a certain belief that the country ruled by Putin would not attack us? Out of naivety or out of good relations with Germany, which has been doing good business with Moscow for years, or perhaps something else?
I think that PO politicians showed great naivety and behaved as if they had no knowledge at all about the history of Poland and the history of our country’s relations with Russia. Such a lack of knowledge may be understandable in the case of someone living, for example, in the United States or even Spain, in any case far from Russia. Such a person may be naive and may not know the ambitions and traditions of Russian military expansion.
However, if we live in Poland, feel Polish and know the history of our own country, we should have no doubt that Russia is a very dangerous country and we should take into account that we can be attacked.
Therefore, despite what some naive, pacifist French or German politicians sometimes tell us, we cannot be naive. And precisely because we are Poland, we must be prepared to defend our entire territory.
And it is probably quite surprising that politicians, who during their government proposed a defense plan for Poland, which consisted of handing over part of the country to a potential aggressor with virtually no defense, are now very eager to talk about Poland’s security. They criticize the purchases and arms contracts of the current authorities, claim that they will modernize the army again within a hundred days, invite generals to their party conventions and finally announce the restoration of Polish-Ukrainian relations?
These current statements are an attempt to cover up the shameful behavior of previous years. However, PO politicians cannot deny this, because there are documents that prove it. After all, Law and Justice does not present its opinions, but the most important documents of the state: the country’s defense plan.
PO politicians are unable to admit their mistakes, so they try to cover up these shameful past decisions with promises that they will now take care of the military and act in a patriotic manner.
However, they are not reliable in this regard. If someone has betrayed half the country once, he can do it again.
And could they betray only half of Poland, or, for example, also our allies? For example, could the hypothetical new government of Donald Tusk, after a possible takeover, engage Ukraine together with Germany in a game that is not very good for it, or issue promises, probably without any basis? as Berlin is probably currently doing?
If they were to come to power, I think the main goal of this Platform Team would be to implement the goals of the politicians in Berlin, so that Poland’s interests would not count and be subordinated to German policy. When the Germans told them to come to terms with Russia, Tusk’s government came to terms with Russia. If Germany were to suddenly decide today to form an alliance with Ukraine, it would also enter into such an alliance that would probably be to the detriment of the interests of our state, our own country.
Today we see how they try to take advantage of what is happening in Polish-Ukrainian relations. Finally, I would like to ask you: what is your assessment of the current grain dispute? Is Kiev really starting to play like Berlin?
It seems that the grain issue has become a certain pretext for President Zelensky to turn to Germany and seek the protection of, let’s face it, the strongest country in the European Union.
However, this did not have to result in such a violent attack on Poland, as we saw during President Zelensky’s speech to the UN.
Ukraine has made a certain geopolitical turn. Unfortunately, our diplomats have been quite passive lately and have failed to convince Kiev that the best way to strengthen Ukraine is through cooperation in the region, that is, with Poland and other countries on its eastern flank. Only by creating such a lobby at the European Union and NATO can we best protect both Ukrainian and Polish interests.
Ukraine decided to choose an alliance with Germany, probably based on some advantages, which, however, in my opinion, are unlikely to happen. Berlin will always treat Ukraine instrumentally and prefer good relations with Moscow over Kiev.
Thank you very much for the interview.
