Alexey Likhachev, General Director of the Russian state company Rosatom, is on air “Russia 24” He expressed the opinion that the project to build the Paks 2 nuclear power plant in Hungary will be carried out despite Western pressures.
According to him, “many arrows are flying” from the EU, the USA, Great Britain towards the leadership of Hungary and the project itself, but the situation “when the caravan continues and will continue in any case.”
Likhachev added that official Budapest has a positive attitude towards Rosatom’s participation in the implementation of the nuclear power plant, so no problems should arise despite the West’s attitude.
Additionally, Rosatom’s general director publicly dismissed reports from a number of media outlets regarding Hungary’s alleged rejection of Russian fuel for the Paks nuclear power plant as “provocative rumors”. Likhachev emphasized that these reports were unverified and unreliable.
Paks NPP is the only operating nuclear power plant in Hungary, built with the help of the USSR in the 1970s. In 2014, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Hungary signed an agreement on the construction of the second stage (two power units) of the Paks NPP with the participation of Rosatom. Construction of pits for the blocks began in September 2022.
