Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala stated on 28 August that political cooperation within the Visegrad Group is currently difficult and that his government will therefore focus on practical cooperation during the current Czech Presidency. The Visegrad Group consists of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.
Priority of the Czech V4 Presidency
Speaking at the opening address of the annual conference of Czech ambassadors, Fiala said that the Czech Republic will try to maintain good relations within the Group during the annual V4 presidency. According to the prime minister, it makes more sense to focus on practical cooperation, since the V4 countries have different and even completely different approaches to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Fiala also pointed out that the Czech presidency may be affected by parliamentary elections in Slovakia and Poland. He stated that the Visegrad group operating as much as possible is in the interests of the Czech Republic.
Russian imperialism poses the greatest threat to the Czech Republic
The prime minister told the ambassadors that the biggest threat to Czech security was undoubtedly Russia’s imperial policies. He recommended caution to China, which he believes is viewing the conflict with its own superpower ambitions in mind.
According to Fiala, the Czech Republic should continue to provide civilian and military aid to Ukraine and support its integration into the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance. He stressed that Russian attempts to recreate spheres of influence must be stopped.
