The political initiative of the Tour de Constitution shows its true face. It was intended as a lesson in democracy for citizens, but it undermines the sacred right of every Pole to steer democracy. At the meeting in Kielce, the highly politicized prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek produced a ‘guide’ for the participants in the referendum, which should invalidate it.

Meetings in trams of the Tour de Konstytucja were supposed to be apolitical meetings. It was enough to listen to just a few words from the well-known actor and political activist Andrzej Chyra to have no doubts about who supports this “apolitical” initiative.
We need to win a lot to have an impact on what happens after the election. Win with enough majority to override the president’s veto, and I think that’s what we should focus on.** Gain confidence. We wander around and we got so scared (…). There’s still some time. There’s nothing to worry about. We have to win it and win it well!
– said, among others, Andrzej Chyra, who was cheered, among other things, by prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek and a handful of spectators.
Attack on the referendum
An important element of the meeting in Kielce was the horror of the referendum idea, i.e. direct democracy. Shockingly, however, the event, which has the word “constitution” in its title, touches on issues related to the choice of Poland and the democratic discussion of the country’s main problems.
Because every conscious citizen knows that this referendum is a bypass, an abuse that those in power decided to use for several reasons: to increase turnout (…). This referendum, in the form in which it was announced, is generally an abuse of the provision in the constitution that says about the important issues in which the referendum is to be held.
– said prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek.
A guide for the “apolitical” prosecutor
The “apolitical” prosecutor then presented a “handbook” that could be used to invalidate the referendum.
If we don’t want to take part in the referendum because that’s what I’m saying because it’s our right, not our duty, then the person who doesn’t want to take part at the time of collecting the cards, the referendum should make this clear to the members of the committee, so that it is noted that she did not take the referendum card with her. Make sure this annotation is checked (…). There are voices that you can take the card and then tear it. It’s a document, maybe not a ballot, but I don’t recommend it, I don’t recommend it. We are legalists, we do not destroy documents
– said Ewa Wrzosek.
It is unfair of the legislature that we should behave in this way. To some extent, this has implications for the Electoral Secrecy Act. (…). I can imagine that in a small town someone who does not want to participate in a referendum could be publicly stigmatized (…)
– argued the prosecutor from Warsaw.
The shocking statements made during the “Tour de Konstytucja” are the sad norm of this political event. What is shocking, however, is the attack on direct democracy and Poland’s constitutional right to express their views. Ewa Wrzosek’s ‘Manual’ should end with further disciplinary charges against her.
