Earthquake in Turkey
On the night of February 5–6, southeastern Turkey and northern Syria were hit by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake; followed by dozens of weaker earthquakes. According to estimates, the disaster affected about 13.5 million people and an area larger than the territory of the Czech Republic.
Not only mine rescuers from those regions, but also experts from Poland took part in the rescue operation. At the beginning of July, 18 mine rescuers from Polska Grupa Górnicza (PGG) and Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW) received a Gold, Silver and Bronze Cross of Merit in Katowice. President Andrzej Duda honored them for their contributions to mine rescue and selfless aid to the victims of the February earthquake in Turkey.
Mine rescuers are first class specialists whose skills are not only used in mines. They joined in action after the Katowice International Fair hall catastrophe in January 2006, they also helped in covid hospitals during the coronavirus pandemic.
