We will talk to everyone who will not be in the Senate Pact to think about his start – said Sławomir Neumann, a PO politician in the first program of Polish Radio, who was asked about the start by former education minister Roman Giertych for the Senate.
Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Education (in 2006-2007) and former leader of the League of Polish Families, Roman Giertych, who has been out of politics since 2007 and works as a lawyer, announced on social media that he intends to run for the Senate in his own committee from the Poznań district. He added that he counted on the support of the opposition groups who communicated within the framework of the Senate Pact.
When asked whether the opposition would nominate a counter-candidate for Giertych in the Senate, Neumann replied that a candidate from the Senate Pact would be nominated in that constituency. He stated that he was not convinced that Giertych would be a candidate.
I wouldn’t prejudge the personal details today, who will be and who won’t, because we’ve been hearing a lot of applications lately
– he said.
Senate pact and nothing else
When asked if they want to talk to Giertych about withdrawing, the PO politician replied: We will talk to anyone who is not in the senate pact to think about his start.
It will involve at least a few people, a dozen or so
he clarified.
He admitted that such persuasion does not always succeed, because in 2019 it failed to convince some of the candidates who ran outside the Senate pact.
At the end of February, representatives of: KO, Poland2050, Nieuw Links, PSL and the Local Government Movement “Yes! For Poland” signed a statement concluding the so-called Senate Pact. It is assumed that these parties will not run candidates against each other in the Senate elections but will nominate common candidates in all constituencies. They will be drawn from all parties in proportion to the opinion polls for each of them and taking into account the best odds in a given constituency. Current senators belonging to opposition clubs will be given priority in their eligibility under the pact.
