According to sources, Seoul is considering paying compensation through a South Korean state-owned fund rather than seeking compensation from two Japanese companies for forced exploitation, per the Korean court’s 2018 ruling. In Japan, they refused to recognize the court’s decision, arguing that all the consequences of militaristic policy were resolved by the 1965 agreement.
As a friendly gesture, the Japanese government will express regret at the consequences of Japan’s military aggression in Asia, apologize to workers, and lift restrictions on exports of certain technologies to South Korea. Japanese companies will be able to donate to the Korean fund.
The rapprochement between Tokyo and Seoul comes after President Yoon Suk-yeol promised to take a forward-looking approach with Japan.
