Anton Costasprestigious economist and wise communicator, former head of the Economic Circle of Catalonia, currently head of the Economic and Social Council, gave an interview in which he warned of a perverse vicious circle: “If today’s youth cannot access housing, they will not be able to have children, the demographic crisis will worsen, the economic crisis will come, more young people will not be able to liberate themselves…”.
And to the question of how the journalist will face this situation, the expert replied, “with two policies: One is an affordable social housing policy that allows young people to be emancipated and start a family. The second is free and universal preschool education. If young households did not have to pay for childcare, they would be spared an enormous financial burden. It would help them set up a home and have children. It will increase the job offer of some of the women and increase public income through personal income tax”.
If you think about it, it’s common sense, but neither of the two suggestions appear in the current approaches of political parties: there is no major plan for social housing and housing remains the main vital issue. and possibly no progress in free preschool education, which should be free by constitutional mandate. It is politicians who have the future in their hands, but it is absurd that they do not listen to the advice of real experts.
