The complex results of last July’s general elections reveal a decisive factor in the final balance: each member of the electorate not only responded to the demand for the ideological option that they deemed closest; There is a general trend towards the marginalization of VOX, namely the rejection of the far right and, secondarily, the more centrist right that falls into the error of normalizing the extremists. Feijóo single-handedly admits his complicity with Vox and agrees to agree with him, while all other formations radically deny that VOX could be in the nation’s government.

This evidence shows that Sánchez has a real chance of securing adequate support for the investment. It would not be easy for the Junts to block this support because their own Catalan voters would not understand it, and such a mistake would result in knocking out the votes of Catalan nationalism, which suffered a serious setback and knew what would happen if it led to something new. elections. In any case, it seems reasonable to think that if it did, the progressive majority would reproduce it corrected and augmented.

Well then: If this prediction is fulfilled, the first political urgency will be to normalize the situation of the Judiciary. It goes without saying that the board of judges has been in office since December 2018, meaning it will remain unstable for five years at the end of the year, because the People’s Party has so much power. Rajoy, who had an advantageous position in that body since he was elected with an absolute majority, refused to accept the new situation. The PP’s refusal to abide by the constitutional provisions is very serious and politically enough to discredit the organization that carries on such a bloodless revolt against the constitutional system, here and in European examples. EU Justice Commissioner Reynders reiterated last week Europe’s “concern” over this violation.

As is known, the governing coalition headed by Sánchez reviewed the 2020 Judicial Service Act reform, which revised downwards the parliamentary majorities required for the chambers to approve the appointment of 12 councilors from the judiciary by an absolute majority. Three-fifths of Congress and the currently established Senate are qualified majority. Sánchez withdrew his proposal after Europe warned that this reform might violate anti-corruption standards set by the Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption (Greco) (it should be noted that the Council of Europe has nothing to do with the Council of Europe). Unity). In any case, “Europe” pressured the PP to agree to the renewal of the CGPJ “before” a reform proposed by Brussels and demanded by the PP was carried out, so that the judges could intervene more directly in the election of their representatives about the Council. Now the renewal of the judiciary is urgent; We’ll get into the nuances later. Since these reforms will not be enough to regain the credit lost by most politicized judges: Revolving doors should be closed radically so that those who left the judiciary to enter politics do not return there. And it is necessary for the General Council to exercise quality ethical and professional oversight over the judicial branch.

Likewise, the reform of the Judiciary should include the drive for decentralization. Representation of nationalist minorities in the CGPJ is highly desirable and this possibility should form part of the agreement that government entities – PSOE and Sumar – must reach with these minorities to support the next legislature. Because the people’s decision on July 23 sends a very enriching message: The two major state parties cannot legitimately marginalize minorities who represent sensitivities that need to be integrated into institutions.

It’s hard to reconcile the heat of this harsh August with the political urgency, but this year there is no choice but to try. Citizens do not expect it, and rightly so.
