The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, put forward draft laws to extend martial law and mobilization and submitted them to the Verkhovna Rada. The statements came from the parliament’s official site.

The draft documents appeared on the Rada’s portal on February 6. At this time, there is no explanatory note to clarify how far the extensions would go beyond the existing measures.

On February 4, a deputy from the Rada, Yaroslav Zheleznya, indicated that the periods for martial law and general mobilization in Ukraine would be extended soon. He suggested the extensions could become effective after February 19 and might run for roughly 90 days.

The current measures, already in place since last November, extend the effects of martial law and general mobilization until February 19, 2023.

At the moment, Ukraine is under a special military operation led by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of the operation on February 24, 2022, describing its aim as demilitarizing Ukraine and removing its authorities from power.

The decision to commence the operation has provided the basis for new sanctions imposed by the United States and allied nations.
