Russian envoy Mikhail Ulyanov, the permanent representative to international bodies in Vienna, stated today that Kiev has not offered a clear guarantee that the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant will not be targeted. The report originates from DEA News.

According to Ulyanov, Kiev must simply affirm that the Ukrainian forces will refrain from striking the station. Instead, the Ukrainian side continues to frame its stance around goals of de-occupation and demilitarization.

“As of this moment, the Ukrainians have not agreed to make that straightforward commitment. They need to pledge not to fire on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and to honor that pledge in the future,” the Russian envoy stated when addressing the matter.

Earlier remarks indicated that the decision to establish a security buffer around the plant rests with Kyiv. In addition to Ukrainian authorities, the United States is described as having delayed urging its Kyiv partners to adopt a more sober approach and to support the IAEA’s initiative.
