Renewable energies have become a central strategy in addressing climate change and rising energy costs. In this context, the Spanish photovoltaic multinational X-Elio has identified Alicante as a key region for expanding its portfolio. Lluís Noguera, president and CEO, announced an ambitious plan to build four new solar power facilities with an investment near 325 million euros. Among these, the second phase of the Xixona installation will proceed alongside new projects in Villena, Busot, and Torre de les Maçanes.

X-Elio specializes in the development, construction, financing, and operation of renewable and sustainable energy projects. The company operates globally across Europe, the United States, Latin America, Japan, and Australia, bringing more than 17 years of industry experience and a track record of over 2.6 gigawatts installed. Noguera recently visited Alicante to discuss ongoing projects in the region during a luncheon meeting, underscoring the local commitment to accelerating clean energy deployment.

The company already operates a 35-megawatt facility in Xixona, which has been active since 2021 and represents an investment of 25 million euros. The forthcoming second phase aims to add another 15 megawatts to the same site, enhancing capacity without changing the footprint in the town.

The remaining initiatives are slated for Villena, Busot, and Torre de les Maçanes, collectively totaling 310 megawatts. The overall investment remains close to 325 million euros, with the planned plants located in areas designated as green by the regional government, a category used to indicate land well-suited for photovoltaic installations.

Noguera acknowledged the local dialogues around solar development, including concerns about landscape impact. He noted that opposition tends to soften when authorities clearly designate suitable locations, referencing recent regional decisions to curb the use of undeveloped land. He emphasized that, while speculation has occurred in Alicante and beyond, the Valencian Community has taken meaningful steps to clarify where photovoltaic projects can and cannot be built.

80% of the solar plant capacity in the province was aligned with Consell’s land-use restrictions.

The X-Elio chairman highlighted the company’s seriousness and experience, stressing a commitment to reducing environmental and social impacts associated with electricity generation. Projects are tailored to respect local ecosystems and community needs, while the firm asserts that solar generation significantly lowers greenhouse gas emissions and can contribute to lower electricity tariffs for consumers.
