A 50-year-old worker died after falling from a height of five meters while performing repairs on the deck of a merchant ship in La Nucia. Though he was initially transported to Marina Baixa District Hospital, he did not survive. UGT reports that the deceased was not registered with Social Security, and the union offered its legal services to the family to pursue action.
The information indicates that the incident occurred at around 10 in the morning on a Wednesday. The Colombian worker was on the roof of a warehouse when he fell through a skylight from a height exceeding five meters for reasons not yet determined. After medical teams arrived, two ambulances attended to the scene and began resuscitation efforts before transporting the worker to the hospital. He died shortly after due to extensive injuries.
Juan Francisco Richarte, head of UGTs Department of Occupational Health, indicated that the man was not registered with Social Security through the contracting company. The union offered its legal services to help the family pursue a complaint. He stated, It is unacceptable for this type of accident to occur because a simple clamping system could have prevented it. Not being hired is equally unacceptable, and our legal services will pursue accountability.
Increased activity after the two year pandemic in the province tripled the fatal occupational accidents
Richarte stressed the need for proactive oversight. He called for greater resources to Labor Inspection and for the creation of a union representative role to safeguard workers in small firms, noting that there is currently no one dedicated to defending employees’ rights.
