The Burgos case centers on a 42-year-old man who was arrested this Saturday following the reported death of his wife. Forensic sources provided to EFE indicated that the 20-year-old woman died in a manner compatible with suicide by hanging, and pre-existing trauma conditions were not identified as the cause of death.

Police in Burgos, Spain, detained the Spanish national on Saturday afternoon at their shared residence on Avenida del Cid after he initially called 112 twice on behalf of the Romanian partner who was the victim. He appeared highly agitated and had locked himself in a room holding a knife when officers arrived.

When authorities reached the scene, the woman was already deceased. The man claimed he had hanged himself and had lowered the body, according to initial statements from witnesses and the scene assessment.

Investigators collected evidence and reviewed neighbors’ testimonies, and officers later arrested the man as a suspect in the alleged murder of his spouse. However, an autopsy conducted on Sunday aligned with conclusions that the death was consistent with suicide by hanging, per the coroner’s assessment. The victim reportedly sustained pre-mortem injuries, but investigators determined these injuries were not the cause of death. So far, the National Police have detained the man, but charges of murder or gender-based violence had not been filed.

After the hearing, the court on duty ordered the man’s release, a decision confirmed by judicial sources.

suspended concentration

The release of the prisoner prompted Burgos City Council to suspend the planned concentration, initially set for a later hour this morning. Burgos Mayor Cristina Ayala spoke with the media about yesterday morning’s events, and an associated gathering organized by civic groups was canceled.

The Popular Group in Burgos City Council, which governs in coalition with Vox, stated that based on the latest developments and the prisoner’s release without precautionary measures, the silent vigil at Plaza Mayor would be canceled at the scheduled time.

The group also noted that the Government Subcommittee had not classified the incident as a gender-based violence murder, which influenced the decision to pause the event.

From Burgos Town Hall, officials condemned violence in all its forms and urged the public to support awareness and education efforts that reflect respect for everyone. Police in Burgos reported no prior gender-violence complaints involving the detained man, though he did have a history of violence toward a former partner. Police records indicate the deceased had been a victim in previous relationships.
