Urban Cycling Surge in Spain

Spain is witnessing a strong upswing in bicycle use as part of a broader commitment to sustainable mobility. The general secretary of the Brands and Bicycle Association told Efe that around 20 million people are now regular cyclists, weaving cycling into daily life for recreation and sport alike.

Over the past year, cycling has continued to expand, with at least one weekly ride by 11 million riders and a roughly 40% rise since 2019. These figures come from the latest barometer released by the Cycling Cities Network, underscoring a sustained momentum across urban areas.

The increase follows the post-isolation period and a growing public dedication to sustainable transport. Freire notes that cycling serves not only as entertainment and sport but also as a practical mode for everyday trips, reflecting a broader lifestyle shift toward healthier, more connected urban living.

Environmental concerns remain a factor, though they are complemented by comfort, practicality, and ongoing health benefits that motivate more people to choose pedal travel as part of their routine.

According to the barometer, the most common activities involve walking (84.1%), sports (79.2%), daily trips (56.9%), health visits (40.4%), and commuting to work (36.9%). The gains in the last two categories have been notable since 2019, with training centers rising about 11 points and commuting up 10 points, signaling a broad shift in how Spaniards structure their weekly mobility patterns.

Urban Cycling and the Rise of E-Bikes

The urban shift is reinforced by roughly 20 million Spaniards who regularly ride bicycles, with mountain bikes remaining a staple choice. Electric bikes have gained momentum in recent years, expanding the reach of cycling beyond traditional routes and distances.

In 2021, the AMBE report Bicycle Sector in Numbers documented sales of more than 220,000 electric bicycles at an average price of 2,861 euros. Freire urged government action to fold cycling more fully into a broad sustainable-vehicle purchase plan, noting that many riders cover longer distances and enjoy weekend excursions that extend the reach of cycling into new contexts.

Josep Travería, manager of a bicycle care products firm, described e-bikes as a sustainable alternative to motorcycles, even as concerns about battery life and upfront costs persist. The rise of cycling has also driven growth in accessories and components, spurred by a surge in demand during 2021.

Sales across Spain reached about one and a half million units, with an average price around 984 euros. This positioned the country as a leading producer of bikes and brands, and as a significant exporter within Europe, highlighting the industry’s resilience and global footprint.

Commitment to Cycling as Policy and Culture

The belief is that neglecting cycling is unsustainable. Freire praises the expansion of cycle paths, parking facilities, and public-bike programs in cities such as Seville, Valencia, Barcelona, and Madrid. He foresees a clear, citywide cycling push over the next five years, with plans to extend infrastructure and services to more municipalities across the country.

Travería adds that education and citizen awareness are key. Residents are encouraged to consider leaving cars behind and embracing pedal transport to curb city CO2 emissions, particularly in metropolises like Madrid and Barcelona.

Urban planners and community groups are increasingly coordinating to create safer, more inviting environments for cyclists, from protected lanes to smart traffic signals and bike-friendly public spaces. The overall effect is a cityscape that supports healthier living, lower emissions, and a more vibrant street life for residents and visitors alike.
