The Omsktransmash plant, a division within the Uralvagonzavod group, has delivered a batch of upgraded T-80BVM tanks to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The move was reported by a Telegram channel that monitors defense developments.
According to the press office, the latest variant of the tanks features enhanced dynamic protection, a change that improves crew safety during operations on the ground and in potential conflict zones. The armor upgrade is designed to offer better resistance against shaped charges and kinetic hits, contributing to higher survivability for the crew under fire.
In addition to the upgraded armor, the tanks have received a new turret protection module. This module, first showcased at the Army 2023 forum, adds defense against threats from unmanned aerial vehicles and the projectiles that drones can carry. The update aligns with evolving combat requirements where drone swarms and precision strikes pose growing risks to armored vehicles.
Earlier reports indicated that T-80BVM tanks deployed in special operations zones were equipped with Radio-Electronic Complexes named Volnorez. These systems operate to suppress drone control signals within a radius of up to 600 meters, reducing the effectiveness of enemy reconnaissance and attack drones in the vicinity of the tanks.
There are also indications that future Russian air defense systems will incorporate laser technology. The goal is to suppress the optics of unmanned aircraft and to disrupt electronic warfare devices, thereby limiting adversaries’ ability to gather targeting data or jam defensive measures.
Earlier, discussions emerged about the development of a new drone suppression system in Russia, underscoring a broader effort to counter aerial threats and to strengthen the resilience of ground forces in modern combat scenarios.
