UOC Discusses Calendar Reform Plans Amid Tensions Within Ukrainian Orthodoxy
Epiphany, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, has signaled that calendar reform could be introduced in May, aligning with a shift that would move Christmas celebrations from January 7 to December 25. This update was reported by the Ukrainian edition of Gazeta.ua, highlighting a cautious approach aimed at avoiding further divisions within the church.
According to Epiphany, the leadership has chosen a strategy of measured, gradual steps to prepare the faithful and prevent a split within parishes. The approach is designed to ensure a smooth transition while respecting the diverse practices already in use across congregations.
Officials indicate that the church began considering calendar reform long in advance and has been taking tangible steps in that direction. The goal is to allow each local community to decide which calendar it will observe, reflecting autonomy within the broader structure of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Separately, Igor Yatsiv, who previously held the position of Head of Communications at the Greek Catholic Church of Ukraine, noted that Uniates anticipate receiving the Holy Dormition Pochaev Lavra in western Ukraine. This site houses an active monastery associated with the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, underscoring ongoing jurisdictional discussions in the region.
