Unidas Podemos highlights a series of amendments to the Sustainable Mobility Bill. Among the proposals is a plan to ban short-haul air travel on routes that offer a direct rail alternative within Spanish territory when flight frequency falls below four hours.
The party explains that these measures aim to accelerate decarbonisation, safeguard public transport services, and place transport safety at the center of policy decisions.
They also call for the Ministry of Transport to deliver a report to the European Parliament within one year of the law’s enactment. The amendments propose eliminating both national and international cargo flights on routes where annual goods traffic exceeds 100,000 tons, provided that rail alternatives take less than six hours.
In the compiled amendments, Unidas Podemos outlines concrete decarbonisation targets and advocates for rail transport as a key component in achieving a climate-neutral public transport system before 2050.
Reduce the emissions of freight trucks
One provision sets a goal for freight trucks to reach a net-zero carbon dioxide emission target as soon as feasible, with a target year around 2035, or alternatively to establish zero greenhouse gas emissions at ports and docks, among other measures.
Rafael Mayor, vice president of Unidas Podemos, emphasises the public’s right to action and underscores that a robust, reliable public transport system is essential to maintain quality standards for users and workers alike.
In this framework, the amendments propose the creation of user-friendly applications that ensure access to public transport services, with integrated information and ticketing for options such as buses, trains, and taxis.
Put tasks in VTC
The changes also strive to guarantee transparency and stability in transport pricing, proposing regulated tariffs for public services and potentially establishing public service obligations or regulating private providers. The amendments include a stance on the Taxi Project, criticizing certain ride-hailing algorithms for potential anti-competitive practices.
On the other hand, the amendments stress the importance of involving workers in the transport sector so they can report actions or omissions that could affect safety. They call for protections that safeguard whistleblowers and ensure fair decision-making processes regarding mobility and safety risks, including appropriate compensation from employers in cases of retaliation.
