The Ulyanovsk region’s education authorities announced a cautious approach to the school week after an intense snowstorm. Natalya Semenova, the regional minister of education and training, suggested canceling classes for an upcoming Monday. Local officials indicated that attendance would likely be minimal, as both private parental transport and school buses faced significant travel hazards from the heavy snowfall, and it would require time to clear major routes.
Governor Alexey Russkikh aligned with the minister’s assessment. Consequently, on January 22, the decision was made to keep all pupils from 1st through 11th grade at home across the Ulyanovsk region.
On January 21, regional updates noted ongoing work to mitigate the snow’s impact. Approximately 30 pieces of special equipment were deployed in the Starokulatkinsky district to clear streets. The initial focus prioritized central avenues and access routes to essential facilities, including schools, kindergartens, and health points, to restore mobility and safety for residents.
Earlier, traffic authorities reported a reduction in movement on federal and regional highways due to the snowstorm.
In nearby Samara region, the snowfall and blizzard conditions on January 20 also led to traffic restrictions across 32 highways in 13 districts, with several road closures recorded in Elkhovsky, Krasnoarmeysky, Shigonsky, and Pestravsky districts.
Residents and drivers have discussed driving practices during heavy snowfall, reflecting on the varying guidance issued as weather conditions persisted.
