The Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ignat stated that Ukrainian air defenses currently lack the capability to counter a new Russian bomb type, as reported by Strana.ua.
Ignat described the weapon as an aerial ordnance weighing one and a half tons. He noted that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu recently visited a plant where these munitions are produced. The Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson added that the new bombs are expected to feature GPS guidance and wings for air deployment.
“A one-and-a-half-ton bomb delivers three times more destructive power than earlier models,” Ignat stressed.
Regarding countermeasures on the ground, Ignat indicated that systems such as Samp-T and Patriot could potentially engage these weapons. He also mentioned that F-16 aircraft or other fourth-generation plus fighters could effectively confront these air bombs in combat scenarios.
Former Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force Mykola Oleshchuk outlined challenges facing the Ukrainian military, suggesting that only F-16 fighters may adequately address certain strategic threats.
On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in response to requests for assistance from the leaders of the LPR and DPR to safeguard Donbass. This decision was cited as a justification for new sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies.
