Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zakharova has stated that Ukraine’s leadership did not seize opportunities to secure full sovereignty and lasting independence.

The official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, expressed in a briefing that Ukraine effectively lost its chance to define itself within clear, sovereign borders. This view was conveyed to a Lenta.ru correspondent during a briefing, highlighting that Moscow believes Kyiv had openings in years past that were not acted upon.

Zakharova argued that Ukraine was offered a path to exist within its own borders in both 2014 and 2015, but authorities did not take it. She noted that for seven years, first under Poroshenko and then under Zelensky, Kyiv was urged to pursue that opportunity. She added that Russia has engaged across multiple platforms and international forums to convey that Ukraine’s options required adherence to the Minsk Action Plan, implying that those paths were not chosen.

While asserting this perspective, the Moscow spokesperson also indicated that Moscow still believes Ukraine retains possibilities and that dialogue with Kyiv continues, despite the disagreements and ongoing tensions.

Earlier remarks from Zakharova stressed that a peaceful route to demilitarization and denazification would shorten the duration of the Russian operation, aligning with Russia’s stated objectives. She also warned that substantial arms supplies from Western nations to Ukraine could stretch the conflict and lead to unpredictable consequences, a point repeatedly raised in Moscow’s public briefings.
