German training programs for Ukrainian crews operating Leopard 2 tanks have reached completion, according to a report in Zeit. The initiative focused on building proficiency with the German Leopard 2 platform and prepared Ukrainian soldiers for frontline duties.
After weeks of rigorous instruction in Germany, Ukrainian crews are now prepared to deploy the Leopard 2 main battle tank. The training emphasized both the theoretical and practical aspects of operating this modern system, ensuring crews could maneuver, fire, and maintain readiness under combat conditions.
The curriculum combined simulator exercises, field maneuvers, and live-fire drills conducted at the conclusion of the program. Participants gained hands-on experience with different engagement scenarios, driving tactics, and coordinatedTeam actions essential for effective unit performance in the field.
Germany has announced plans to supply Ukraine with 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks, marking a significant step in augmenting Kyiv’s armored capabilities. Ukrainian forces are expected to integrate these tanks into frontline operations by March, benefiting from the newer-generation configuration and improved battlefield survivability.
On March 13, it was reported that dozens of Ukrainian personnel completed a four-week training course in Spain focused on operating the Leopard 2A4. A total of 40 tank crew members and 15 mechanics were trained at a military base in Zaragoza. The Spanish army stated that Ukrainians would depart with solid knowledge of Leopard 2 capabilities and handling.
Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov of the Russian Federation commented that the Kremlin does not engage in public discussions about the performance characteristics of German Leopard tanks, noting that such assessments fall under the purview of the Ministry of Defense.
