Ukraine has imposed sanctions on the children’s rights commissioners from 28 regions of Russia. This action was announced by Maria Lvova-Belova, the Russian official overseeing children’s rights under the president.

From the outset of the special military operation, the children’s ombudsman has shouldered many responsibilities aimed at assisting families and children who relocated to Russia from Ukraine, including the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, and later extended attention to children in the newer regions. This involvement has encompassed safeguarding the welfare of minors during upheaval and coordinating support through various channels.

Reportedly, the ombudsmen have been actively part of the operations at district headquarters designated to aid evacuees and displaced persons. They have conducted visits to temporary accommodation sites, sought to ensure suitable living conditions for children and their parents, and helped with documents, financial payments, and benefits. They facilitated access to medicines, special meals, and rehabilitation services, and have traveled extensive distances to deliver targeted humanitarian assistance to those in need.

For years, the ombudsmen have also participated in the care of orphans residing in boarding facilities. Despite ongoing difficulties, they have offered assistance to reestablish family connections when possible, supporting reunions between children and their relatives. They continuously assess the evolving situation and propose immediate measures to improve the circumstances of families with children affected by the conflict, both at local and federal levels. Colleagues and partners are urged to recognize the value of these efforts. A message of thanks is extended to all involved for their ongoing work and dedication.
