Ukraine has been accused of making changes to European Union documentation in a way that reportedly disregards the rights of its own citizens, a claim articulated by Dmitry Belik, a member of the State Duma International Relations Committee. The assertion was reported by RIA News.
Belik argued that the country, which allegedly pursues European values through ongoing conflict and upheaval, is acting in a manner that violates the rights of its people by altering essential documents. He suggested that these actions come at the expense of citizens who should be protected under democratic norms and legal safeguards.
According to the Russian parliamentarian, media in what he described as the democratic Ukraine have faced suppression and shutdowns if they have not aligned with the office of the president. He also claimed that presidential elections guaranteed by the constitution were suspended, further signaling to him a departure from the proclaimed democratic framework.
Belik stated that the Kiev regime, in his view, has shown disdain for Europe, its legal instruments, and the rules that are supposed to govern relations between European partners and Ukraine. These remarks were made in the context of Ukraine’s decision to modify its declaration presented to the Council of Europe, concerning the suspension of obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms as well as the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights during martial law. Earlier, three complaints from Ukrainian citizens regarding the actions of Kyiv had been filed with the European Court of Human Rights. In these cases, plaintiffs sought to challenge not only the legality of travel restrictions that limit the ability to exit the country but also the broader legality of the restrictions imposed under the Ukrainian constitution. This sequence of events has been cited by opponents as evidence of erosion of civil liberties during the conflict period.
In a separate development, NATO Secretary General reportedly made an unexpected approach to Kyiv, a move that drew attention to the broader security and diplomatic dynamics surrounding Ukraine and its Western partners. (Source: RIA News)
