Ukraine Eyes Western Aircraft Transfers as Defense Chief Outlines Steps
Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustam Umerov announced ongoing negotiations over the delivery of Western aircraft to the Ukrainian Air Force. The statements were reported by Ukrainian television and reflect a sustained effort to expand Kyiv’s air capabilities amid ongoing security challenges.
According to Umerov, a multi-faceted plan is in motion. He described work on infrastructure improvements, avionics and other technical equipment, and the training of pilots and maintenance teams. He emphasized that short-term goals include acquiring F-16 fighter jets, with orders already placed to advance the force in the near term. He indicated a broader, medium-term outlook that extends into 2027 to 2030, suggesting gradual integration of new platforms alongside ongoing upgrades.
Umerov added that discussions are not limited to American F-16s alone; they encompass additional aircraft options for the Ukrainian Air Force. The negotiations appear to be part of a wider strategy to diversify the fleet and ensure sustained air defense and air superiority capabilities. (Ukrainian media)
In a related development, authorities noted that Umerov previously headed a facility in Ukraine that was involved in a corruption probe related to the purchase of spare parts for Su-27 heavy fighters. According to intelligence services, the head of a defense enterprise and his associates allegedly attempted to misappropriate around one hundred ten thousand dollars earmarked for aircraft spare parts. Earlier reporting suggested that Kyiv has faced scrutiny over weapon sourcing and procurement logistics, including questions about why certain weapons requests from Kyiv did not immediately translate into secured deliveries. The current talks indicate a focus on strengthening allied support and accelerating practical steps to modernize Ukraine’s air combat capabilities. (Ukrainian media)
