A U.S. resident has filed a civil suit after police arrested her, mistaking her for another woman on Christmas Eve in Fort Lauderdale. The incident disrupted holiday plans and raised questions about how identity checks are handled at ports and in custody settings.
Jennifer Heath Box, traveling with her husband on a Caribbean cruise, disembarked in Fort Lauderdale and was preparing to fly to Houston to celebrate with children, including a son serving a lengthy overseas assignment. The couple looked forward to quiet moments at home, making the day even more painful given the distance already imposed by duty overseas.
Soon after leaving the ship, Box was taken into custody and spent Christmas Day in a detention cell. Investigators later concluded she had been mistaken for a different woman, twenty-three years younger, who shared Box’s eye color, hair shade, and complexion.
Authorities also attached Box’s photo to an arrest warrant under a name that did not match hers. The error was acknowledged, and she was released once police corrected the record and confirmed her identity.
Box described the experience as humiliating and degrading and said she intends to pursue a civil claim for compensation against the agency involved, arguing that the incident caused personal harm. Local officials indicated that the underlying fault lay with state authorities rather than the local department, though accountability remains a central topic in the case.
