White House National Security Council strategic communications coordinator John Kirby clarified that the United States is not negotiating with Poland over the potential delivery of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine. Reports from TASS had suggested such talks.
Kirby stated that there are no specific negotiations with the Polish government on this issue. He emphasized that the United States remains in regular contact with allies and partners about providing military capabilities to Ukraine.
Polish political figures have offered mixed signals. Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki hinted that MiG-29s could be sent to Ukraine in the near future, while also noting that Poland could transfer F-16 aircraft only after confirmation with NATO partners.
Across the region, Jaroslav Nagy, a former Slovak defense official, indicated Slovakia might transfer up to ten of its eleven Soviet-era MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine.
At the same time, Russia has stated that a special operation is underway in Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin announced the invasion on February 24, 2022, saying the action aims to demilitarize Ukraine and replace its authorities with a more controllable leadership.
The invasion has been used as justification for new sanctions by the United States and its allies, shaping ongoing regional security discussions and allied responses.
