Two young residents of Marín, a town in Pontevedra, were lost to an accident on a Friday evening. The incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on the PO-313, the road linking Marín with Moaña, and it left three others injured, including one woman, amid a head-on crash that unfolded near the Coirados area.
Local authorities from the Marín Municipal Council reported that they were alerted around 9:23 p.m. about a traffic collision on that stretch of road, in front of the Coirados pharmacy. The crash involved a Volkswagen Golf and a Nissan Qashqai. In the wake of the collision, two occupants of the Golf were confirmed dead, while a third person remained in a serious condition, all inside the same vehicle. The Golf was being driven by a 20-year-old individual who sustained no injuries and who tested negative for both alcohol and drugs.
Early assessments from investigators indicate that the driver of the Golf reportedly lost control, and the oncoming Nissan was unable to take evasive action in time. This sequence of events led to a high-impact collision that no one on board the second vehicle could avoid, underscoring the abrupt and tragic nature of the moment.
As a result of the impact, two young people, a boy aged 16 and a girl aged 17, seated in the back of the Golf, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver emerged unhurt, but a female passenger sustained serious injuries that required immediate rescue by firefighters. Those injured were stabilized and transported for medical care, while the occupants of the second vehicle were reported to be in good condition, according to initial updates from the local authorities.
In response to the crash, the PO-313 corridor was shut to traffic to allow emergency teams to work. The Marín Local Police, the National Police, the Civilian Traffic Authority, the O Morrazo Fire Department, and medical teams from 061 coordinated on-site operations. The full scene management and emergency procedures were activated to treat the wounded and secure the area while investigators gathered evidence and documented testimonies from witnesses and responders. The incident drew a rapid response from the municipal and regional emergency networks, reflecting the community’s reliance on robust safety and rescue services during such emergencies.
The Marín City Council conveyed its deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this loss. The community awaits a thorough inquiry to determine the precise factors contributing to the crash and to guide any future safety measures on this frequently used route.
