Two suspects face a face-to-face jury trial in Madrid after prosecutors pursued substantial prison terms in a case involving the death of José Ismael Rosado, a Miami visitor and former chief executive of a major Spanish shipyard. The incident dates back to October 29, 2021, when prosecutors allege a robbery attempt escalated into murder through the delivery of a highly potent chemical—GHB—in drinks, with both defendants accused of acting with the intent to kill or seriously harm the victim.

The prosecution has requested 17 and a half years in prison for the first defendant, referred to as MVP, and 19 years and three months for the second defendant, identified as MC. The charges include manslaughter, violent robbery, and ongoing crimes of fraud. In addition, the Public Ministry seeks a ten-year deportation for the second defendant after completing the sentence portion, along with financial penalties amounting to 100,000 euros to Rosado’s mother and 50,000 euros to his sister.

At the time of the alleged crime, Rosado, a resident of Puerto Rico and visiting Madrid for vacation, was staying at the Palace Hotel. Prosecutors indicate that two men, one Moroccan and the other a Romanian national, were already under investigation for prior violent robberies. The pair are described as being in Spain illegally, with the Moroccan individual holding multiple prior convictions and the Romanian suspect reporting nine previous arrests in similar contexts.

According to the indictment, in the early morning hours around 5:00 a.m., the two defendants entered Rosado’s hotel room. They allegedly acted together with the shared aim of obtaining money through unlawful means while Rosado was either unconscious or otherwise incapacitated. They allegedly served Rosado wine laced with GHB at doses described as far above those ordinarily tolerated, resulting in respiratory depression and fatal poisoning. Rosado was found dead the following day, with authorities later confirming the cause of death.

Investigators say the two men were inside the hotel with the intention of seizing control of the victim’s assets in the event of his death, or while he remained unconscious. They allegedly took Rosado’s phone, tablet, and two debit cards, and later attempted to profit from the stolen information and possessions. The subsequent investigation led to the two suspects being arrested in December 2021, several weeks after the incident, following routine police work and interviews.

Authorities have described Rosado as a prominent business figure, noting his leadership role at Hijos de J. Barreras, one of the largest private shipyards in Spain. The case has drawn attention in both the United States and Spain due to Rosado’s high-profile business status and his ties to international business circles. The trial will address the central questions of intent, the sequence of events on the night in question, and the responsibilities of the defendants in the alleged poisoning and ensuing financial exploitation. The court will also consider compensation for Rosado’s family as part of the judicial proceedings, alongside potential deportation consequences and any additional penalties the jury may decide. The proceedings mark a critical moment in how violent crime, corporate exposure, and international residence status intersect in Spanish courts, with implications for similar cases across Europe and North America.
