A brutal clash between two men left one seriously injured after a machete was used in the confrontation. The assailant struck multiple times, including inflicting a severe wound that led to the partial amputation of the victim’s hand. The injured man, 34, is currently in the intensive care unit at Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona, receiving round-the-clock care.

Two men, both with long criminal records, collided in a fight outside a bar

Authorities say the suspected attacker was arrested Wednesday in the Sant Eugènia district. The Mossos d’Esquadra identified him shortly after the incident, and this morning the Girona Municipal Police located and detained him. He is 30 years old and faces charges of attempted murder with preliminary indications that the case could be upgraded to aggravated assault if the victim’s condition deteriorates or remains critical.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Police have not yet been able to obtain a statement from the victim. Early indications point to possible revenge as the underlying cause. Both individuals involved have extensive police histories.

The incident occurred Tuesday around 10:30 p.m. and prompted a rapid response from Mossos d’Esquadra who arrived on Avenida Sant Narcís after receiving reports of a bar fight. On arrival, officers found a man with multiple stab wounds inflicted by a machete—cited by witnesses as a cleaver-like kitchen knife—near the abdomen and with a seriously injured hand. Witness accounts describe a flare of violence: the assailant allegedly left the scene for a short period and returned armed with the machete, targeting the other man.

Emergency medical services transported the wounded individual to Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona by ambulance. Doctors report the patient remains in a critical condition but stable, with prognosis reserved as doctors monitor for any changes.

The Girona Investigation Unit of the Mossos d’Esquadra continues to handle the case as open and active. The detained suspect will be presented before the courts in the coming hours.
