TsNIItochmash, a subsidiary of the Rostec state corporation, is advancing small arms development with a modular approach that uses interchangeable components. This strategy aims to simplify maintenance and repairs by standardizing the core parts across different weapon platforms. The information comes from TASS, citing the government agency’s press service.

As a practical demonstration, a carbine outfitted with modular exchangeable sections has been shown. This design allows barrels to be swapped quickly to accommodate different calibers, enabling rapid adaptation to various mission requirements without the need for a full weapon change.

Officials described the team at TsNIItochmash as possessing the expertise to scale the modular concept beyond the civilian sector and into platforms developed for military use. The overarching goal is to unify the essential components across a range of firearms, including machine guns, assault rifles, and submachine guns, through a shared modular framework. This unification is expected to simplify logistics, reduce training burdens, and enhance reliability across different weapon families.

Earlier announcements highlighted Russia’s progress in modular firepower, including the development of the multi-caliber rifle DXL-5 Ravager, known in export markets as Havoc. The rifle is designed to fire NATO standard cartridges such as the 12.7 x 99 millimeter round, with modularity identified as a central feature that supports versatility across ammunition types and engagement scenarios.
