Toyota, the Japanese vehicle maker, faced a broad pause in production in its home country as fourteen factories temporarily halted operations on Tuesday due to a malfunction in the company’s computer systems. The pause affected multiple sites across the nation, suspending production lanes across fourteen domestic plants in total. At this time, officials have not set a timeline for when manufacturing will resume, leaving the situation unresolved for the moment.

A company spokesperson told EFE that the disruption stems from a system error that is blocking parts orders. The spokesperson emphasized that this is not attributed to a cyber intrusion and that there is no clear indication of when operations might restart. The firm is quietly and methodically investigating the root cause while keeping affected teams ready to respond as soon as the system comes back online.

In an update, Toyota confirmed the suspension covers twelve factories, with two additional plants being added to the list, culminating in a halt of all twenty-eight production lines spread over the fourteen sites. The company continues to analyze the incident and has not announced a definite timetable for resuming normal activity at its factories.

The news had an immediate impact on Toyota’s trading activity. Shares opened on a positive note on the Tokyo Stock Exchange but slipped as the day progressed, dipping by about 0.38 percent by mid-session as investors reassessed the potential implications of the production stop.

The current disruption follows an earlier event in March when Toyota had to halt production at all its domestic plants due to a problem tied to a supplier. That incident affected ordering platforms and forced Toyota to suspend operations across fourteen manufacturing sites including operations under the Hino and Daihatsu brands. The result was a projected reduction in monthly output of around 13,000 units, roughly five percent of the usual volume for the period.

Officials and industry observers note that the timing of today’s suspension comes amid heightened global concern about potential cyber threats targeting countries that have sanctioned measures connected to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While the company asserts the outage stems from a system error rather than a deliberate attack, authorities continue to scrutinize the circumstances to determine whether any external factors might have influenced the incident.
