Three youths sustained light injuries on Saturday after a group clash involving machetes and other bladed weapons near a sports complex in the Madrid region. Police sources told Europa Press that the altercation appeared to be gang-related and involved teenagers from rival groups in the area of Arganzuela, Madrid.

The incident unfolded in broad daylight at the sports facilities located at number 5, Calle Ramírez de Prado, in the Delicias district, around 13:10 on Saturday. Witnesses described a tense scene as a group identified as Dominican Playing (DDP) had been playing basketball when members of a rival faction, known as Trinitarios, reportedly arrived to confront them with blades. Roughly twenty individuals were involved, creating a chaotic moment inside and around the court area.

Emergency responders from Samur-C Civil Protection arrived promptly after neighbors called for help. They treated a young man who sustained bruising but did not require hospital transfer at the scene. Another youth, located on nearby Vara del Rey street, was treated for minor stab wounds to the hip and hand and was later transferred to the Jiménez Díaz Foundation for further evaluation and care, according to Madrid Emergencies officials.

National and municipal police also arrived at the scene, making one arrest as investigations began. A 17-year-old boy of Venezuelan origin and two other individuals associated with the Trinidadian group were taken into custody amid reports that a separate group of Hispanic youths of South American descent had surrounded them. Police later located another boy believed to be connected to the DDP group who had sustained a cut during the clash near the Embajadores Metro station.

Individuals familiar with the case told ABC that one of the attackers admitted he had come from Santander, where he currently resides. The three suspects were handed over to Madrid’s National Police Minor Group, which recovered the machetes used in the attack. The Information Brigade was assigned to lead the ongoing inquiry and gather additional evidence from the scene and those involved.

Government representatives in Madrid confirmed that the incident appeared to be linked to gang activity during a briefing on Tuesday. They noted that several Trinidadians were alleged to have targeted the DDPs while they played on the courts. Officials also recalled that the Arganzuela area is included in the Anti-Gang Plan launched by the Government Delegation in February. The plan aims to curb organized violence and violent street clashes by coordinating police resources and community outreach in high-risk zones.

Officials further stated that the National Police currently had no suspicions linking these events to other recent violence, and they did not connect the incident to the murder near the precinct of a local rapper last year, which involved claims of abuse by some DDP members. The investigation continues, with authorities evaluating security measures around sports facilities and the broader implications for youth violence and gang recruitment in urban districts around Madrid.

In the broader context, law enforcement agencies are emphasizing preventive work with communities, schools, and sports clubs to reduce the allure of gang groups and to provide safe outlets for teenagers. Community leaders have called for more after-school programs and mentorship opportunities to offer alternatives to gang involvement. While authorities work to determine the full sequence of events and the exact affiliations of those involved, residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to help prevent further violence in public spaces used by families and young people alike.
