National Police have arrested a couple from a municipality along with the perception Levante-EMV, a newspaper owned by the Prensa Ibérica group, on suspicions they paid to acquire a six-year-old boy who is described as the son of a distant relative. The individuals, temporarily detained, are under investigation as authorities pursue the facts. At this stage, the couple has been released while investigations continue and the court reviews the case.
The mother in the case is reported to have had a 25-year-old daughter. It is alleged that the husband pressured the woman to surrender the boy to his relatives at a police station in central Madrid, with compensation reportedly involved, though the exact amount has not been disclosed.
Police sources say the complaint was filed at the Madrid-Retiro police station on June 6 and prompted investigators to begin the process of locating the child. Officers assigned to the case began gathering information to determine the child’s whereabouts using data provided by the mother.
Following the initial inquiries, officers learned that the boy likely had been living in a private residence for about a month, in Algemesí, with distant relatives of the husband. The responsibility for transporting the child would have been assumed by the couple involved in the report.
As the investigation progressed, Retiro police officers, acting through the Valencia Superior Headquarters, sought the child’s location and potential custody arrangements from what were described as two possible buyers. Authorities noted the need to verify the child’s safety and well-being before taking any further steps.
In coordination with the Family and Women’s Care Unit, the couple were identified through the Alzira police station and were summoned for questioning. It was agreed that the minor would be voluntarily surrendered to a suitable care facility, and authorities continue to clarify all circumstances surrounding the case. The matter is being reviewed within the protections framework for minors under the Equality and Inclusive Policies Department.
On the day of the proceedings, the husband was detained at a police station but was released following his testimony to investigators. He indicated that, when summoned, they were required to appear before the competent court for formal processing.
According to the sources cited, the boy had resided in Algemesí for roughly a month with the paternal relatives now implicated. Preliminary indications suggest the child displayed warmth and affection toward the couple, who later refused to accept payment for the minor, even as other parties were considered as potential buyers.
