The head of the All-Russian Fleet Support Movement, Vladimir Maltsev, announced that the Project 941 heavy nuclear-powered strategic missile submarine Dmitry Donskoy has been withdrawn from the Russian Navy. This update is reported by TASS.
According to Maltsev, the submarine will be held for disposal at the naval base in Severodvinsk, alongside two other submarines of this project that are also slated for destruction.
Maltsev stated that the name Dmitry Donskoy will remain on the Navy ships list, and a new strategic submarine bearing the same name is under construction at the Sevmash shipyard as part of the Borey-A project.
Back in November 2022, it was reported that a nuclear-powered submarine of Project 671RTMK from the Northern Fleet, the Saint Daniel of Moscow, had been sent for recycling.
Toward the end of December, TASS, quoting a source close to Russia’s military-industrial complex, reported that the Tambov nuclear submarine has finished modernization. The source noted that the vessel has already entered the North Sea for trials, which could last up to six months depending on performance results.
